Guidance counselors are important members of any school faculty. Students and teachers come to them for advice every day. I think that guidance counselors provide leadership within the schools that they work in. How do you see the word leader fitting in to your role as a guidance counselor?

  1. Principals often look to guidance counselors for advice when dealing with difficult students. Often times, guidance counselors can diffuse a situation before it escalates.

  7. I agree they are seen as leaders but often students and teachers confuse the role of the counselor and see them as disciplinarians.

  17. i think we are leaders but do not have the opportunity to do the work we are suppose to do. we can lead discussions, parent groups, and class room lessons but to lead we also have to have enough people to do the work.

  19. The counselors are leaders by providing support to students, teachers and administrators. At times the responsibilities are overwhelming yet others in different positions do not realize all we do.

  20. Yes, as high school counselors we do often diffuse escalating student behaviors. However, often lines can easily be crossed if an administrator expects us to be involved with the decision regarding disicplinary action. We are meant to be advocates for students, not disciplinarians.

  21. yes, we are leaders somewhat, but with the added duties, such as IST/RYI, registration and withdrawal of students, being the school coordinator for PSSA tests, sometimes I feel more like a secretary, than a leader.
