Guidance counselors are important members of any school faculty. Students and teachers come to them for advice every day. I think that guidance counselors provide leadership within the schools that they work in. How do you see the word leader fitting in to your role as a guidance counselor?
Principals often look to guidance counselors for advice when dealing with difficult students. Often times, guidance counselors can diffuse a situation before it escalates.
ReplyDeleteBut counselors don't get paid what counselors do and are often utilized as Vice Principals
ReplyDeleteSchool Counselors Rock!
ReplyDeleteI agree!
ReplyDeleteSchool Counselors are advocates for everyone, which makes them leaders in mediation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you!
ReplyDeleteI do believe that we are leaders and role models and often play a bigger impact on students lives than we will ever know.
ReplyDeleteI agree they are seen as leaders but often students and teachers confuse the role of the counselor and see them as disciplinarians.
ReplyDeleteWhat is challenging is to have the classroom teacher that the disruption happened in recognize that the situation has diffused.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Sometimes Principals rely too much on counselors and we are doing their jobs at times.
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDeleteCounselors are leaders but too often lead behind the scenes only!
ReplyDeleteGuidance counselors do it ALL!! We are there for our students, parents, staff and principals whenever they need us.
ReplyDeleteSometimes principals want to keep counselors out of the loop because of their own sense of security.
ReplyDeleteI think we are leaders and our principals really rely on our expertise!!!
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, counselors and administrators must work as a team to effectively meet the needs of students.
ReplyDeleteCounselors lead students, teachers, and parents.
ReplyDeleteleadership is important
ReplyDeletei think we are leaders but do not have the opportunity to do the work we are suppose to do. we can lead discussions, parent groups, and class room lessons but to lead we also have to have enough people to do the work.
ReplyDeleteHS counselor
Administrators can be taught to respective a definition of counselor that doen't include discipline.
ReplyDeleteThe counselors are leaders by providing support to students, teachers and administrators. At times the responsibilities are overwhelming yet others in different positions do not realize all we do.
ReplyDeleteYes, as high school counselors we do often diffuse escalating student behaviors. However, often lines can easily be crossed if an administrator expects us to be involved with the decision regarding disicplinary action. We are meant to be advocates for students, not disciplinarians.
ReplyDeleteyes, we are leaders somewhat, but with the added duties, such as IST/RYI, registration and withdrawal of students, being the school coordinator for PSSA tests, sometimes I feel more like a secretary, than a leader.
ReplyDeleteCounselors are great!!! I agree they can help with a variety of different situations. They are a great resource!
